Shoulder Care Access Project Clinic
What is the Shoulder Care Access Project Clinic?
Many people in Alberta are referred to see a shoulder surgeon for their pain, but wait times can be long, and most injuries or shoulder problems do not require surgery. The Shoulder Care Access Project (SCAP) Clinic was created to accurately assess patients with shoulder problems who may need further treatment. No referral needed.
The SCAP Clinic is a research initiative at the University of Calgary Sport Medicine Centre. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the benefit of an online self-referral tool to improve access to high-quality, timely and cost-effective shoulder care for Albertans. We will be collecting shoulder-specific healthcare information that is designed to help evaluate and manage shoulder conditions. Any information used for research purposes will be kept confidential and anonymized.
Benefits include:
- Direct access to specialist level care to determine appropriate diagnosis for treatment
- A customized diagnosis and treatment plan
- Surgical referral for those who may need surgery
Please note, the SCAP Clinic is not for work-related injuries (WCB) or injuries that result from a motor vehicle accident (MVA). If you have had recent shoulder surgery (in the last 12 months) you should return to your surgeon. You must be 16 years of age or older. If you have already seen your primary care practitioner and have been referred to see a specialist or to another shoulder clinic, please follow that route for your care. We are not able to offer second opinions.
How to access the clinic
The Shoulder Clinic uses a web-based self-referral screening questionnaire to gather patient injury information to identify patient needs prior to a visit. This self-referral process allows you to access specialist level care without needing a referral from another healthcare provider.
Is there a cost for visits?
All visits in the Shoulder Clinic are covered under Alberta Health Care with a valid Alberta Health or provincial health care card. Your assessment team may recommend additional treatments that are not covered by Alberta Health.
